PALM BEACH, FL — President Donald Trump spoke just moments ago of his decision to order a military strike against Syria.
Speaking at his Mira-Lago estate, where he was in the midst of meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping, a visibly angry Trump said the decision was a direct result of this week’s chemical attack upon the Syrian people by the country’s leader, Bashar al-Assad, which lead to the deaths of 86 people, 27 of which were children.
“Even beautiful babies were murdered in this very brutal attack. No child of God should have to suffer such horror,” said Trump. “We ask for God’s wisdom as we face the challenges of our very troubled world… We pray for the souls of those who have passed.”
The decision to strike Syria is sure to add additional conflict to the already strained relationship between the United States and Russia as the Russian government is a backer and supporter of Syria.
According to sources, Trump did not speak to Putin in advance of the strikes, but did notify him via military to military channels. A military spokesperson said the president also received “support from a broad list of nations.”
The president ordered a cruise missile strike against a Syrian airfield just a short time ago. According to a military spokesperson, the U.S. military fired at least 50 missiles from a U.S. Navy vessel in the Mediterranean Sea.
