WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Massachusetts law enforcement official is calling for the arrest of sanctuary city leaders who refuse to comply with president Trump’s new federal immigration orders.

Testifying before Congress on Tuesday, Bristol County, Massachusetts Sheriff Thomas Hodgson told the House Subcommittee on Illegal Immigration that sanctuary cities “have become magnets for illegal aliens, some of which have violent criminal records” and said the time has come to get tough with city leaders who fail to comply.

“If these sanctuary cities are going to harbor and conceal criminal illegal aliens from ICE, which is in direct violation of Title 8 of the U.S. Code, federal arrest warrants should be issued for their elected officials,” Hodgson said. “Our citizens would be safer if we never stopped enforcing immigration law and if we never formed or turned a blind eye toward sanctuary cities.”

“These officials pledge not to work with, cooperate or even communicate with federal immigration enforcement,” Hodgson continued. “Sanctuary cities are a direct violation of trust between legal residents and the elected officials who took an oath to protect them at all costs. At the worst, it’s careless, illegal and extremely dangerous.”

Hodgson said sanctuary city leaders will quickly see a change of attitude “if their leaders start running into legal trouble.”

The sheriff said that making judges available during evening hours would be of great help when it comes to the issuing of warrants. “This could prevent the bail or release of a dangerous criminal illegal alien,” Hodgson said.

Hodgson said he had no problem with legal immigrants, just those who enter the country illegally, adding that his own father was an immigrant from England who became an American citizen “the right, legal way.”

“We need to continue accepting immigrants who follow the rules and go through the legal process, not reward those who come here illegally,” he said.

The sherriff also criticized Rep. Michelle DuBois (D-Brockton), who earlier this week warned illegals of a planned ICE raid in her jurisdiction.

“I have a message for the immigrant community of Brockton. Please be careful on Wednesday 29. ICE will be in Brockton on that day. If you are undocumented don’t go out on the street. If there is a knock on the door of your house and you don’t know who it is, don’t open the door. I ask you to be careful,” DuBois wrote in a Facebook post.

Hodgson called DuBois’s action the “most outrageous, outrageous example of what is going on across the United States that is undermining my job and every other law enforcement officer in the United States” and slammed the representative as an example of everything that is wrong with government.

Last week, in an effort to increase the heat on sanctuary cities, the Department of Homeland Security presented to president Trump its first weekly list of cities that refused to cooperate with his administration’s immigration crackdown, including the crimes committed by illegals within their jurisdiction.

During a press conference on Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced plans by the Trump administration to impose financial sanctions on sanctuary cities who have refused to comply.
