WASHINGTON, D.C.– House Intelligence Committe head Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) told reporters on Wednesday that his committee has seen no proof to back up allegations by president Donald Trump that his offices were wire tapped by Democrats during the 2016 election and essentially called for the president to put up or shut up.

“We don’t have any evidence,” Nunes told a group of reporters in Washington, D.C., but added it is “very possible” that Trump’s communications were caught up in the FBI’s surveillance of Russia.

“I don’t think there was an actual tap (but) we think we understand how Gen. Flynn was picked up from incidental collection,” said Nunes before calling on the president to present proof of his claims that former president Obama had ordered his phones to be wiretapped.

It was also announced on Wednesday that FBI Director James Comey has agreed to appear at a public House Intelligence Committee hearing next week to give testimony on the investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Bipartisan pressure has been growing from members of the Senate panel, which oversees the Department of Justice, to look deeper into the matter.

The House Intelligence Committee’s top ranking Democrat, Adam Schiff, said Comey would be asked about the wiretap allegations during his testimony next week. “It deeply concerns me that the president would make such an accusation without basis,” said Schiff.

Also scheduled to testify on the matter next week is Admiral Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency.

U.S. intelligence agencies have suggested that Russia may have conducted cyber attacks on Democrats in an effort to influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. election, an allegation that Russia has vehemently denied.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that Trump was “extremely confident” the Justice Department would produce evidence to support his claim of wiretapping by the Obama administration. A spokesperson for the former president has called Trump’s allegations “ridiculous”.
